Update v1.1 - Bug Fixes, UI Tweaks, and Side Dialog


Beat the Buzzer v1.1 is now live!

Hey, thanks again for playing my game. Not gonna lie, it's a little surreal to see people still playing something I've made this long after it came out. I'm very bad at responding to comments but I read - and genuinely appreciate - all of 'em. Feedback helps me improve and I consider myself very lucky to have gotten so much of it this time. (Both on itch.io and elsewhere!)

This post-jam build adds a few sequences that had to be cut for time, in addition to general polish and accessibility features. If you've already made it to the credits of the original then you probably won't learn anything new - but hopefully the information that is present is a bit clearer. Tempting as it is to go back and add in every wild idea I had during the course of development, Beat the Buzzer is a small gamejam game with an even smaller story. Best to keep it simple and save those ideas for another time.

GAMEPLAY CHANGES

  • FFWD: The game will now only let you fast-forward scenes you've already seen
  • Pause: hitting Escape during quiz sections now *actually* pauses the game
  • Dialog box tweaks: text can be larger, in a plain font (Gidole), left-aligned, colour-inverted (black text, white box), and have an opaque background. The Notepad also comes with Gidole, in case you can't read Clarissa's handwriting
  • Static: can be toggled on/off from the video menu
  • Cursors: The cursor will change to a hand whenever you can interact with the real world
  • HUD changes: Strikes are depicted as 'X's, top bar is more readable, question number is always displayed, visual indicator when holding down fast-forward
  • Notebook Tweaks: Can now be opened with the 'N' key as well as 'J'. Option to auto-hide the notebook after answering a question, so you don't miss any text.

BUG FIXES

  • Randall's sprites have been re-cropped so he is no longer uncomfortably close to the camera all the time
  • Credits no longer display assets I didn't wind up using
  • Added missing sound effects (mostly studio audience related)
  • Added missing menu graphics
  • Fixed an issue where the expository letter would sometimes fuck off before it was read and not come back
  • Fixed an issue where answers A and C would be hard to click while the notepad was open
  • Fixed an issue where Question 9's answer would change (answers changing is a bug, not a feature, so please message me if you notice any discrepencies!)
  • Miscellaneous text fixes

STORY STUFF (SPOILERS)

  • More dialog variations: scene changes, multiple-run changes, game over changes, question changes. You should see slight differences much more often now!
  • Additional "I need a break" interlude
  • Answering "C" to the final question now has unique dialog, depending on what's written there
  • Rebooting the game after the game 'crashes' now has a unique sequence
  • It is now very, very clear when you've seen all the tape has to offer

KNOWN ISSUES

  • It's not possible to show/hide the notebook during dialog. This is not planned to change, as it would require a full rework of my dialog system and take more time than I currently have
